Description

The general aims of this module are to develop a philosophical appreciation of the relationship between law and morality and to cultivate an understanding of how moral theories can inform debate within (and about) the law. More specifically, the aims and objectives are to consider the legitimate scope of the law; to consider a range of moral theories, and the nature and foundations of moral judgments; to introduce a number of particular conceptions of law and to consider whether law must be conceived of as a moral phenomenon; to consider the relationship between legal argumentation and moral argumentation; to consider the nature of legal rationality and to apply moral judgments to a range of controversial legal questions.
